The John Brown Set of Four Chippendale Shell-Carved Walnut Side Chairs
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1770.
Two chairs appear to retain their original underpinnings.
Three period seat frames are marked I, II, III and IV. Frame III is inscribed Brown, J. Frame IV is inscribed in pencil Robinson and This chair was reupholstered & repaired in 1883.
Provenance: John Brown (1736-1803), Providence, Rhode Island;
To his daughter, Sarah Brown Herreshoff (1773-1846);
To her son Charles Frederick Herreshoff (1809-1888);
Thus by descent in the Herreshoff Family line.
