• Lot Description
  A distinguished eccentric, Juan Kraeppellin (1948-2009) made himself known in his natal Guadalajara by re-naming himself with the surname German father of modern psychiatry. A maverick, Juan Kraeppellin was an avid lifelong reader, without formal academic formation. His work and artistic vision shifted the concept of poster advertising to an elevated art form. "Kraeppellin" left a legacy of numerous artistic pieces, proof of a substantial production throughout 30+ years of career. He lived permanently in contact with artists, coming to have a distinctive stamp in his work, as seen in ''Harper's Bazaar'', ''Dogs'' and ''Abstract Colours''. This piece is a relic of the early stage of his career, where he shows a conventional, straightforward technique. The striking colours and the lettering in “Harper’s Bazaar” foreshadow the provocative and radical nature of his works in the latter stage of his career. Even the green in the background is reminiscent of the Bottega Veneta green that dominated pop culture nearly a century after Kraeppelin chose it for this piece.
