He began his art studies in Florence working for a time with Giovanni Giacometti, a leading Swiss painter and father of Alberto Giacometti, the sculptor. Leich reports that his principal teacher in Europe was Arthur Siebelist in Humburg. Leich studied graphic art technique with Wilhelm Oesterle in Berlin, who was a pupil of Lovis Corinth, "but seems to have been influenced more, in some of his work, by Kaethe Kollwitz." He eventually settled in Washinton D.C., USA.
