PAIR ANTIQUE 1870S VICTORIAN TABLETOP BEADED NEEDLEPOINT FIREPLACE FACE SCREENS
A pair of Victorian tabletop pole face screens from 1870-1880s. Circa 1870. Unmarked. Possibly English. These tabletop banner type pole screens are hand beaded with fine petit point needlepoint depicting an angel with child with beaded fringe and tassels on a gilded brass frame.
Scarce to find a matching pair. So pole screens were created to block direct heat to the face. These screen can be positioned between the individual and the fire, acting as a barrier while still allowing heat to circulate in the room. despite its relatively small size, the positioning helped block intense heat directly near seated individuals. There are floor pole screens, tabletop screens, and hand held screens.
These screens were a staple of well-furnished parlors and drawing rooms, symbolizing refinement and social status. Their portability allowed them to be moved easily around the hearth, accommodating different seating arrangements. While primarily used to shield occupants from the heat, they also served to conceal the fireplace when not in use, adding an element of elegance to the room's decor.
CONDITION
Complete and in good condition for age. No bead loss in banner panels. Slight typical gold wear on the gilded brass frames. The screens are Victorian and in good condition except for fringe loss and the silk backing is deteriorating badly, you could add a new backing, but it looks ok as it is. Wear to needlepoint found on top with detachment to one screen. Fringe with losses on both screens. Brass frames with some very minor bends. Overall these display beautifully and are in good shape for 150 year old banner tabletop pole screens. These scarce pair of Victorian period face screens are a must for interior decorating or collectors. Displays beautifully.
APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS
Measures about 21-1/2" tall to top of brass finial. Measures about 9 1/4" wide at extremes.
Screens measure Height 10" and Width 7" and fringe 1".
It is our sincere intent to provide an accurate description for all our items. Our antique textiles are collectible and are not new and not reproductions, and have lived a long and eventful life and sometimes developing flaws. We do not launder or dry clean unless stated in listing, and most times have been in storage for many decades picking up old age storage oxidation spots.
Our descriptions are true and accurate to the best of our ability. We try to observe and report every defect that we are aware of to give the buyer an accurate description but to mention every single minor blemish is laborious and unnecessary. As condition and description is largely based on personal opinion, we ask that you look at the numerous photos carefully and decide the rating and pattern if applicable of this item for yourself.
Everything is sold As Is. The stated overall condition of the lot is based on the assumption that the wear is consistent with age and use. The absence of any reference to the condition of a lot does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. All other condition issues are stated above. To request additional condition photos, please email oldthreads@aol.com with the lot number. Condition is a matter of opinion of the evaluator and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Clients must review and agree to the Conditions of Sale before participating in an auction.
