John Phillip Osborne (American b. 1951) Oil on Canvas "Monomoy Shores, Nantucket", signed lower right J.P. Osborne, in carved gilt frame
40 in. x 50 in. Framed 48 in. x 58 in.
Born on July 9, 1951, in Wycoff, New Jersey, John Phillip Osborne started painting at the age of 20. Osborne is both a teacher and painter of the American landscape "en plein aire." Placing an emphasis on how objects in nature are seen in various degrees of sunlight, Osborne works with oil paint to achieve light and shadow effects as they are seen in New Jersey, New England, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, and in Europe. His paintings are intended to convey a direct study of the natural environment in all its mysterious, atmospheric moods. Osborne's awards include include Best in Show at the Hudson Valley Art Association and a Gold Medal of Honor, along with Best of Light and Atmospheric Effects' awards. Osborne was the recipient of the Hudson Valley Art Association's highest honor, Artist in Special Tribute. The Bergen Museum of Art and Science honored Osborne as an inaugural inductee of the Mastadon Artists Society. His paintings have been exhibited at the American Embassies in Moscow, Africa, Indonesia and South America, and locally at the Bergen Museum of Art and Science. Osborne's teaching techniques have been featured in "American Artist" and "Palette Talk." He received the first American Art Achievement Award for Teacher of Oil Painting, and under his guidance high school, college, and professional painters have learned to paint in oils. He is listed in the "Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the East", and he is on the Board of Trustees for the Ridgewood Art Institute. He graduated Cum Laude from the Pratt Institute in New York with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a teaching certificate, and studied with Alban Albert and Arthur Maynard of New Jersey.
