[ABOLITION]. UPHAM, Charles W. (1802?1875). Speech of Charles W. Upham, of Salem, in the House of Representatives of Massachusetts on the Compromises of the Constitution: with an Appendix, Containing the Ordinance of 1787. Salem: Tri?Weekly Gazette Office, 1849. 8vo. Original printed wrappers (minor dust soiling or staining to upper cover). FIRST EDITION. The Ordinance of 1787 addressed the division of slave and non-slave states. However, Article 6 of the Ordinance made it legal to reclaim slaves from non-slave states, exactly as in the later Fugitive Slave Act.
