[AMERICANA]. [CONDER, Josiah (1789-1855)]. The Modern Traveller. A Popular Description? North America. London: James Duncan, 1829-30. 12mos. Each volume with fold-out map of the United States, and a total of 5 engraved plates in both volumes. 2 volumes. Bound in contemporary half dark brown morocco over marbled boards, gilt spines (bindings worn, hinges starting, fold-out maps with tears at folds, some foxing to plates, bookplates of previous owners on front endleaves and an ownership signature on each title-page). Good. FIRST EDITIONS THUS. This early travel guide was a series of books showcasing various places in the world; this set features North America and has handsome engraved plates with early views of the White House (?The President's House"), the Capitol, New York, Niagara Falls, and Quebec.
