[AMERICANA]. GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822?1885). Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885-1886. 2 volumes, 8vo. Engraved portrait frontispieces with tissue guards, folding facsimile letter tipped?in Volume I, folding map and facsimile document in Vol. 2, numerous maps and wood?engravings throughout. Original publisher?s half?morocco gilt with central medallions on both covers, raised bands, gilt?lettering and centerpieces in compartments including the 4?star shoulder straps, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers (extremes a bit rubbed, some splitting to upper joint near head in Volume II, head and spine also a bit worn in Volume II). FIRST EDITION of Grant?s classic memoirs published by Mark Twain in the deluxe publisher?s binding.
