[AVIATION]. [WRIGHT, Orville (1871-1948) and WRIGHT, Wilbur (1867-1912)]. Section of a Blueprint for the 1903 Wright Flyer. [Louis P. Christman, ca. 1940s]. Folded blueprint. Approximately 17 ?" x 22". Partially split at center fold, a few small edge tears. Very good.SECTION OF THE ORIGINAL PRELIMINARY BLUEPRINT FOR THE 1903 FLYER, SHOWING THE AIRCRAFT'S ?FRONT SPAR," WITH A SIDE VIEW OF THE AIRCRAFT'S ENGINE SHOWING THE CHAIN ARRANGEMENT WHICH CONNECTED TO THE CAMSHAFT AND CRANKSHAFT. Six mathematical calculations have been added in pencil at the top of the drawing, either by drafter Louis P. Christman (1893-1972) or by Orville Wright, who had reviewed these plans before the final sets were prepared. The Wright Brothers never produced a complete set of drawings or blueprints for any of their aircraft. In the early 1940s, Orville Wright's partner, Colonel Edward Deeds (1874-1960), hired Christman to create a complete set of drawings for the 1903, 1904, and 1905 flyers, as well as the 1900, 1901, and 1902 gliders. Christman worked closely with Orville Wright to produce an accurate set of drawings for the 1903 flyer (they even traveled to the Smithsonian to take measurements, and later to the Franklin Institute to view the informal drawings done by the Wrights). This blueprint was created before the final drawings were produced.Measurements: 12"L x 10"W x 1"H (folded).
