Bound in near contemporary full mottled calf (rebacked to style in later calf, some color correction to boards, later endleaves, small manuscript label (?Buri?) on fp., gutters facing both free endpapers starting). Fine. SECOND PRINTING OF ELZEVIER?S THIRD EDITION. This work is a historical allegory, focusing on religious conflicts in France under Henry III and IV. This book is pro-monarch and anti-aristocratic. Classics Professor Jennifer Morrish Tunberg describes Argensis as one of the ?two most influential neo-Latin novels? (along with More?s Utopia).
