[BOXING]. WEIR, Ike (1867-1908). Handwritten poem about Ike ?The Belfast Spider? Weir. Late 19th century. Ink on paper with red stamped elements. 254 x 203 mm. Mounted on black board. Old folds. Ike Weir was the first man to take the Featherweight Champion of the World title, besting Frank Murphy on March 31, 1889 in a highly publicized match which lasted an incredible eighty rounds. He would lose the title to ?Torpedo? Billy Murphy early the following year, however Weir would then defeat Murphy during a rematch which saw the Belfast Spider knock the Torpedo clear out of the ring. He would retire with a professional record of twenty-six wins, two losses, and nine draws.
