BURNETT, Frances Hodgson (1849?1924). Little Lord Fauntleroy. New York: Charles Scribner?s Sons, 1886. 8vo. Frontispiece and title vignette, numerous illustrations by Reginald B. Birch. Original publisher?s brown pictorial cloth stamped in red and gilt, brown coated endpapers (extreme spine ends rubbed with some fraying, corners also rubbed, hinges tender); slipcase. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with the De Vinne printer?s device on p. 210, signature mark 12 present, and 14 pp. publisher?s ads at back. First published as a serial in St. Nicholas Magazine (November 1885?October 1886), Burnett?s book ?earned wide praise on its publication; enthusiastic reviewers included Louisa May Alcott, and among its English admirers was Gladstone? (Carpenter & Prichard, 316). BAL 2064.
