[CHICAGO PRE?FIRE IMPRINT]. CARBUTT, John, photographer (1832?1905). Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men of Chicago. Chicago: Wilson & St. Clair, 1868. Thick 8vo. 96 original albumen photographs including a view of City Hall on additional title, each mounted on cardstock with facsimile signatures of the photographer?s subject; each with tissue guard (additional title stamped with previous owner?s initials). Full brown embossed morocco, recased with original backstrip laid down, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers (few scuffs or rubbing to covers, tiny stains to lower margin of titles, small marginal tape mend to p. 692 of index). FIRST EDITION of this scarce pre?Fire imprint and an early work on American portrait photography. Carbutt was a pioneer in American view photography, patenting a development chamber that facilitated expeditionary and Civil War photography. Howes C?363; Truthful Lens 30.
