[CIVIL WAR]. [SHERMAN, William Tecumseh (1820-1891) and HOWARD, Oliver O. (1830-1909), contributors]. Who Burnt Columbia? Part 1st. Official Depositions of Wm. Tecumseh Sherman,? and Gen. O. O. Howard, U. S. A., for the Defence; and Extracts from Some of the Depositions for the Claimants? Charleston, SC: Walker, Evans & Cogswell, 1873. 8vo. 121, [3, blank] pp. Publisher's green printed wrappers (wrappers worn, soiled, joints partially torn, occasional toning to text, ?Jul 8 1921" inkstamp on inner front wrapper). Still, a very good copy of this rare and fragile book. FIRST EDITION. A scarce book of depositions related to the burning of the city of Columbia, SC in February 1865. Sherman's army had entered this pacified city and accepted their surrender. A fire started the same day, which devastated much of the city. The controversy was whether the Union troops burned the city or retreating Confederate troops had set the fire. This book clearly favors Sherman and Howard's viewpoint. The front wrapper states that ?Part 2d will contain the Rebuttal Testimony yet to be taken," but it appears that this part was never published. Sabin 80420. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy. Measurements: 8 x 5 x 1".
