- Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. TWEED, Alexander (1843-1922). Manuscript map of Fort DeRussy, Site of the First Battle of the Red River Campaign. [Ca. 1864, though possibly done some time later]. Pencil and fountain pen on watermarked (1860s) paper (it was laid-inside a later poetry book). Approximately 8 x 5?. Worn, soiled, torn, toned, a faint embossed stamp at upper left. A fair example of an unusual relic from an infantry soldier of the 95th Illinois Infantry, Company F, made during his service. The drawing depicts the fortified Fort DeRussy, with several gun emplacements represented, and the nearby river. Some notes include (at the river): ?for the Iron Clad the river up by the Btrus [?]?; also ?a small gun?, ?a big gun?, ?one gun?. On the verso of the map: ?this is the full drawn of Fort derussia [sic] in 1864?. The creator of the map, Alexander Tweed, was born in Ireland, and his family emigrated to the United States in 1848. He enlisted in the Union Army (95th Illinois Infantry) in 1862, and mustered out in 1865. He later became the Postmaster for Fox Lake, IL. This map is offered with photographic portraits (silver gelatin prints with early ink retouching) of Tweed and his wife, Ida Mae Tweed. Sight of both portraits approximately 9 ? x 7 ??. Matted and framed side-by-side, frame size 16 ? x 23 ??. Some toning, rubbing to portraits. Very good.
