[EROTICA]. [FLYNT, Larry (1942-2021), contributor and publisher]. Hustler Magazine. Volume 1 Number 1. [Columbus, OH: Hustler Magazine, Inc.], July 1974. 4to. Illustrated. 104 pp. Publisher's staple-bound color wrappers.
Some rubbing, occasional minor scuffing to wrappers, some text leaves toned. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF HUSTLER MAGAZINE. The inaugural issue of Hustler, published in July 1974 by Larry Flynt's Flynt Publishing Company marked a radical turning point in adult magazine history. Originally conceived as a spin-off of a promotional newsletter for Flynt’s strip clubs in Ohio (some of which are in this same auction), Hustler debuted as a glossy, full-color men’s magazine—and quickly distinguished itself from competitors like Playboy and Penthouse through its explicit, unapologetic content and populist, irreverent tone. This first issue features a topless cover model and introduces readers to the magazine’s signature blend of hardcore photography, lewd cartoons, political satire, and blue-collar brashness. Far from being merely pornographic, Hustler made an editorial point of skewering religious hypocrisy, political corruption, and American prudery—often crossing lines no other magazine dared approach. Its infamous "Asshole of the Month" column made its debut in later issues, but the roots of Flynt’s confrontational style are evident from the start. As the magazine grew, Hustler became central to First Amendment legal battles in the United States, with Larry Flynt often in the national spotlight. The July 1974 issue is thus not just the start of a publishing empire—it is a document of cultural disruption.
