GLADSTONE, William Ewart (1809-1898). Autograph letter signed (?Wm. Gladstone?) to the Russian Minister, Downing St., dated 24 January 1893. One page, 12mo (159 x 121 mm), old folds. In this letter Prime Minister Gladstone writes, ?My dear Lord, I will take care to look into the case of his Dear (?) with whole house and public character I have (?) acquainted.? William Gladstone?s political career lasted over 60 years, 12 of which he spent as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His sympathy for the plight of the working class made him an extremely popular leader; he was affectionately known as ?The People?s William.?
