- Lot Description
HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Autograph Letter Signed to Arnold Gingrich. Habana [sic], Cuba: Hotel Ambos Mundos, May 24, 1933. 7 pp. on 3 sheets on Hotel Ambos Mundos stationery. Each sheet (unfolded) 7 x 11 1/4". Vertical and horizontal creases, some minor toning, soiling, rubbing. Fine. Written in blue ink. With original mailing envelope. Addressed: "Dear Mr. Gingritch:- [sic]". Signed "Yours always - Ernest Hemingway". An interesting and lengthy letter which touches on several topics, including Max Perkins and John Dos Passos. "Ernie remembers Perkins asked him when I was going to stop calling him Mr. Perkins, but Ernie replied it would cost him at least $10,000.00!" Hemingway mentions Dos Passos: "... very sick. He wrote me he had to return a check to you as he was too sick to do the piece." The first six pages (only) are printed in Selected Letters (edited by Baker, pp. 390-391).
