HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). "The Christmas Gift [and] Part II of The Christmas Gift" in Look Magazine, Both Inscribed by Hemingway. [New York: Cowles Magazines, April 20, 1954 and May 4, 1954]. Folios. Illustrated. Complete magazine of the April 20 issue, and the advance sheets of the Hemingway article for the May 4th issue - issued separately by Look Magazine (the May 4th issue is bound before the April 20th issue). Both issues are bound together in red and green boards, with red gilt morocco lettering label on spine.
Some sunning, toning, minor wear to binding, some occasional edgewear to magazine pages, some toning to text. Fine. With Bruce's stylized bookplate on the fp. Chemised in green cloth slipcase, quarter green morocco, gilt. April 20 issue inscribed by Hemingway on the front cover: "For Evangeline and David Bruce fro Mary and Ernest". May 4th advance issue inscribed by Hemingway on p. [3]: "For Evangeline and David Bruce with love Ernest".
Laid-in is a photograph of David Bruce and Hemingway at Hemingway's 60th birthday celebration. We cannot locate any other copies of these issues signed by Hemingway, making this item most likely unique. Hemingway's story in these issues chronicle Hemingway's (and his wife, Mary's) brush with death in two separate plane crashes in Africa while on assignment for Look. The recipient of one of these magazines was Col. David Bruce (1898-1977), and the other was Bruce's wife, Evangeline (1914-1995). Bruce was the OSS commander in Europe during WWII - both Hemingway and his son, Jack, served under him. Bruce later went on to have a distinguished career as the United States Ambassador to NATO and various countries. Bruce and Hemingway remained devoted friends until Hemingway's death. Bruce famously defended and minimized Hemingway's sometime-questionable behavior throughout their friendship, both professionally and personally. An amazing association.
