HOLMES, Oliver Wendell Sr. (1809-1894). Pair of Autograph Notes Signed. Boston: Oct. 29th, 1866. One note is addressed, "Dear Miss Maddie,"; both are signed and dated at bottom by Holmes. One appears to be a note to Miss Maddie to agree to send her a signed aphorism, and the other is the signed aphorism. Note on plain white paper, the aphorism on plain white laid-paper. Note approximately 8 x 5" and aphorism is 7 x 4 1/2". Each with 2 horizontal creases. Fine.
Text of aphorism: "A few can touch the magic string. And noisy Fame is proud to aim them,- Alas for those who never sing, But die with all their music in them! Oliver Wendell Holmes. Boston Oct. 29th 1866." From his poem, The Voiceless, 1858.
