HOUDINI, Harry (Erik Weisz, 1874 - 1926). Houdini Final Tour/Final Performance Souvenir Program. [New York, 1926]. Twenty-five cent lithographed souvenir program sold at Houdini's final performance in Detroit. Illustrated with photographs. 4to. Newspaper clippings collected by the former owner have been pasted on the last several leaves of the program, including a newspaper advertisement for Houdini's final performance at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit and a publicity story from the paper advertising the show. Below the clipping the owner has inked in the notation, "Last Performance." A RARE if not unique relic from the untimely end of Houdini's life.
This program was obtained by the former owner at Houdini's final performance in Detroit before his untimely death on October 31, 1926. In the intervening years it was kept, along with the theatre playbill from the same show (also offered in this auction) as a memento of the great magician's last show. The newspaper clippings on the leaves at the end of the program include an obituary from the New York Times and elsewhere, as well as stories from the late 1920s regarding his death and attempts made to contact his spirit. Note: this is the "Coat to Coast Tour - Season 1926 - 27" variant of the program; others exist without this text.
Splitting at spine (all but detached), minor chipping around extremities, rear wrapper soiled and wavy from mounting clippings.
Obtained by the previous owner at Houdini's final performance in Detroit, and passed to the consignor after the owner's death.
