Illustrated (lacks portrait frontispiece). 426 pp. Bound in modern full green morocco, with front cloth and spine panels affixed to binding (cloth soiled, worn, faded, title-page toned, worn, chipped, with tape repairs to margins, text toned, soiled, worn, foxed). Fair. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CONTROVERSIAL BIOGRAPHY, THE THIRD ISSUE (with the supplement section on the surrender of Frank James). The controversy arose just before publication when it was revealed by James? widow that she never had any involvement with this title, despite the publisher?s claims; relatively few copies survive today, as Missouri governor Thomas Crittenden had many copies destroyed, as the book stated that he arranged for Jesse James? murder.
