- Lot Description
[KREWSON SR., Martin (1912-2012), sculptor]. ?Injun Joe" Figure from ?The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". [N.p., ca. 1970s]. Lifesize wax figure of the villainous character. Standing figure is dressed in custom-made 19th century-style clothing in vest. Figure with human hair, ophthalmologist-grade glass eyes, and fingerprints, as all figures in this collection. Figure approximately 72" high. Some wear, occasional soiling, figure had been holding a knife in one hand, which is now missing. Near fine example of master wax sculptor Krewson's art. This character is indicative of Twain's prejudice against Native Americans (which is difficult to reconcile with his sympathetic treatment of other minorities, namely African-Americans and Jews). Third-party transportation required.
