La Belle Corsette Neon Sign. Chicago, ca. 1960s/70s[?]. Single-sided porcelain neon sign, blue with white lettering, depicting the Eiffel Tower. 72 x 76?. Neon removed; on a stand with tower-shaped legs. La Belle Corsette was a corsetry, swim-wear, and lingerie firm which operated for many years in Chicago?s Rogers Park neighborhood. It was owned by Celia Elbaum, a Jewish Holocaust survivor who was sent to a concentration camp and, from her early training and skill in corsetry, was forced to sew for Nazi soldiers. She emigrated to Chicago after World War II, eventually saving enough money to open her own store.
