• Lot Description
  LIVY, Titus (d. 17 A. D.). Titi Livii Patavini, Romanae Historiae Principis, libri omnes, quotquot ad nostrum aetatem pervenerunt? Francofurti ad Moenum [Wingadus Gallus], 1568. Folio. With numerous in-text woodcuts by Jost Ammon (1539-1591), one of the finest and most prolific illustrators of the 16th century. Near contemporary calf, rebacked in tan calf, green gilt morocco lettering label, later endleaves (binding worn, soiled, joints worn, hinges cracking, title-page toned, edgeworn, somewhat soiled, text with occasional soiling, wear, approximately the final 100 pages or so have marginal damage (worm?) with no apparent loss of text, some occasional ink notations throughout). An attractive early printed version of Livy?s History of Rome, including the ?Death of Archimedes? engraving on p. 468 (which incorporates the popular belief that Archimedes was so engrossed in his work, he didn?t notice when an armed Roman solider entered his study to behead him).
