MATANIA, Fortunino (Italian, 1881-1963). ?The Wrecked Caravel / Sacrifice of the Spaniards?" Original Drawing. [London, ca. 1946]. Charcoal on paper. Large image depicts a group of people being forced up stairs to a sacrificial altar before an Aztec (?) pyramid, with a human sacrifice taking place in the background; inset is an image of a caravel sinking in the ocean. Signed near lower left corner. Matania has captioned at top: ?Page 1 / Fold / Page 2"; he has additionally captioned ?The Wrecked Caravel" beneath the inset image of the sinking ship. Below, Matania has captioned: ?Fra. Jeronimo de Aguilar / One by one they were marched [?] naked on the sacrificial pious [?] of Jasper [?]." There are more faint editorial pencil markings, possibly in another hand. Sight approximately 14 ? x 20". Matted and framed under plexiglass. Frame size approximately 22 ? x 28 ?". On verso is a photocopy of the verso of the drawing with Matania's copyright stamp. Some thumbsoiling to image. Fine. A handsome yet harrowing drawing with exquisite detail.
