MAYER, Luigi (1755?1803). Views of Palestine? with an Historical Account of the Country and its Remarkable Places. London: T. Bensley for R. Bowyer, 1804. Large folio (476 x 318 mm). Text in English and French. 24 hand?colored aquatint engravings (few marginal stains). Contemporary half green morocco gilt, central royal cipher of Louis Philippe I, King of France gilt stamped on both covers, 6 large compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt fillets and titling in compartments, all edges gilt, silk moir? endpapers (mild edgewear, corners discretely repaired). Provenance: from the library of Louis Philippe I, King of France (1773?1850); several early library stamps to title?page and preliminary blanks. FIRST EDITION IN A ROYAL BINDING, of Mayer?s handsome views of the Holy Land that includes cities, ruins and native costumes.
