R. for John Martyn, 1673. [Bound with, as issued:] A Continuation of the New Experiments Concerning Vipers... London: T. R. for John Martyn, 1673. 12mo. [113] pp. including Errata. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label.
Condition
Rebacked in later calf, label chipped and toned, boards worn, toned, later endleaves, text toned, occasionally soiled or foxed with gutters near title-page cracking and first title-page a bit loose. Good. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF THESE WORKS WHICH CREATED THE SCIENCE OF EXPERIMENTAL TOXICOLOGY. Redi refuted the commonly held beliefs about snake venom (Redi proved that the venom was stored in glands near the fangs instead of the gall-bladder, etc.), and he also invented a method of saving lives by putting a ligature above the bite to prevent the venom from traveling into the heart.
