[MICHIGAN?FUR TRADING] STUART, Robert (1785?1848). Stuart Letters of Robert and Elizabeth Sullivan Stuart and Their Children: 1819?1864. [New York: Harbor Press], 1961. 2 volumes. Large 8vo. Introduction by Helen Stuart Mackay-Smith Marlatt. LIMITED EDITION, one of 500 copies. Illustrated with black & white plates, portraits, and a folding genealogy table. Publisher?s red cloth, spines gilt lettered on a black background, top edge gilt. NEAR FINE. Stuart has long been associated with the early fur trade of North America and credited with discovering the South Pass, a vital overland migration pass through the Rockies. Later, he became the manager of the American Fur Company?s Northern Department, stationed on Mackinac Island.
