Engraved frontispiece after Eisen. [366] pp. Bound in contemporary full calf, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label (some rubbing, light wear to binding, occasional minor foxing in text, a few small ink blots on front endleaves. NEW EDITION OF MONTESQUIEU'S POPULAR HISTORY OF ANCIENT ROME; THE COPY OF BRITISH PRIME MINISTER HENRY ADDINGTON (1757-1844) WITH HIS SIGNATURE ON THE FP. AND HIS NOTE (IN FRENCH) ON THE RFEP. Montesquieu's book on Ancient Rome was so popular and so influential, that it influenced Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) to write his monumental history, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
