- Lot Description
Mt. Vesuvius Pompeii Eruption Lava Plaque. Italy, ca. 1870s. Carvers created intricate designs from hardened lava, represented by this plaque, which shows the volcano in full eruption over the Neapolitan bay. 4 ? x 2?. In custom fitted period box. Very good. During the Victorian era viewing the ruins of Pompeii were a desirable stop for the wealthy travelers on a ?Grand Tour? of Europe. Cameos and plaques carved from the lava - plentiful after that volcano?s eruption - were popular souvenirs.
