[NEWSPAPERS]. [BARKER GANG]. The Atlanta Georgian. Atlanta: Jan. 17, 1935. Vol. XXXIII No. 230. with Special Extra. Two issues. 18pp. (pp. 1-15/20-22); 16pp. (pp. 1-4/9-20). Approximately 21.25 X 16.75". END OF THE TRAIL FOR GANGSTER AND HIS MOTHER, P.1. The two issues feature headline articles describing the killing of Fred and Ma Barker in Ocklawha, Florida: "The Department of Justice wrote finis to two more criminal careers here today when eighteen agents surrounded a summer home and killed Fred Barker, 32, and his mother, Katy Barker, about 55, when the pair barricaded the house and opened fire with machine guns on the agents." In an effort to justify his agents killing an elderly woman, J. Edgar Hoover claimed that Fred's mother, Ma Barker, was “the most vicious, dangerous, and resourceful criminal brain of the last decade." On the front page of the regular edition is a photograph of the house where the killing occurred.
Light toning at extremities with minor chips and small tears. Holes at bottom from possible disbinding. Regular issue with glue and cloth residue at left margin. Leaves of Special Extra loose. Few small tears. Both with missing pages (Regular edition: pp. 1-15/20-22; Special Extra: pp. 1-4/9-20). Good.
