[NEWSPAPERS]. [BARKER, Katy "Ma" (1873-1935), subject]. Atlanta Georgian. Vol. XXXIII No. 230. Atlanta, GA: Jan. 17, 1935. 17pp. (pp.1-4/9-17). 21.25 X 16.5". "AGENTS SLAY GANGSTER, MOTHER IN BATTLE" P.1. The article describes the shooting of criminal Fred Barker and his mother, Ma Barker, by Federal agents in Ocklawha, Florida, on January 16. Fred and his mother were members of the notorious Barker-Karpis Gang during the "public enemy" era. "The Department of Justice wrote finis to two more criminal careers here today when eighteen agents surrounded a summer home and killed Fred Barker, 32, and his mother, Katy Barker, about 55, when the pair barricaded the house and opened fire with machine guns on the agents."
