- Lot Description
[ODDITIES]. Navarro, David, Jr. (1861-ca. 1880s). CDV of Sideshow ?Fat Man,? David Navarro, Known as the ?Illinois Gentle Giant?. [Ca. 1870s-1880s]. Cabinet photo on plain mount. Photo approximately 3 ? x 2 ??. Mount approximately 4 x 2 ??. Minor rubbing. Excellent. Navarro suffered from uncontrolled weight gain (at age 8, he weighed 165 pounds - he eventually grew to 735 pounds). From a young age, he began touring as a sideshow oddity for a variety of carnivals and shows (eventually being hired by P. T. Barnum), making significant money, supporting his entire family. He passed away in the 1880s from Smallpox, while he was planning his marriage to Carrie Glendenning. From the Mark Rucker Collection.
