Old Work Covered Or Done Over. My Work is My Advertisement. Tattoo Flash attr. Ed Smith. New York, ca. 1920. Striking Bowery/pre-Sailor Jerry-style window flash sheet / advertising sign. Ink and muted watercolor on board, affixed to mat. Attributed to Ed Smith, depicting seven classic sailor-era designs, including an eagle with crossed flags, rooster, cat, sailing ship framed in horse shoe, and lady's head. Bold lettering at top spelling "Tattoo," in thick block capitals.
A rare and striking example of early 20th century tattoo flash.
