[QUAKERS]. WYETH, Joseph (1663-1731). Anguis Flagellatus: or, a Switch for the Snake. Being an Answer To the Third and Last Edition of the Snake in the Grass. London: T. Sowle, 1699. 8vo. FIRST EDITION of this response to the anti-Quaker book, The Snake in the Grass (1697) by Charles Leslie. Contemporary full calf, spine backed in later cloth tape, later endleaves (binding worn, soiled, rear hinge just starting, text toned, soiled, with some ink markings throughout including title-page). Provenance: with ownership signatures and markings by Miller Christy, Jr. An important defense of the Quaker religion by a noted Quaker scholar.
