VERNON, Dai (David Verner, 1894 - 1992). Silhouette of Bert Kalmar by Dai Vernon. 1941. Scissor-cut profile silhouette of the famed Broadway and Hollywood songwriter and lyricist by Vernon. Framed to 9 x 6 1/2". SIGNED and dated by Vernon in 1941, and INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by him: "To Bert Kalmar whose songs I still play and whose magic and stories still thrill me. Dai Vernon."
Kalmar wrote several enduring hit songs, including "Three Little Words," owned a music publishing company, and maintained a three-decade-long career as a successful songwriter with his partner Harry Ruby. He was also a screenwriter. But Kalmar's first passion was magic, and as a young man in New York he worked as a conjuror in tent shows and vaudeville. It was in Manhattan that he most likely met Vernon, who is now considered the greatest sleight-of-hand artist of the twentieth century.
