SMITH, W. Eugene (1918?1978). Japan...A Chapter of Image. Tokyo: Tappan Printing Co. Ltd., 1963. 4to. Numerous black and white illustrations after photographs by W. Eugene Smith. Original publisher?s blue rice paper over boards stamped in gilt (rubbing, sunning, chipping to head and base of spine). FIRST EDITION. From 1961-62 W. Eugene Smith documented working conditions at the Hitachi Corporation in Tokyo, in the process creating a photo-document depicting the tension between a rapidly industrializing Japan and the people who were struggling to adapt to it.
