- Lot Description
[STEAMSHIP DISASTERS]. A Ticket for the ?Steamer Magnolia,? with an Inkstamp Dated the Same Day that the Ship?s Boiler Exploded, Killing Nearly 80 People. [Ohio: Maysville and Cincinnati United States Mail Line, 1867-1868]. Original printed ticket on cardstock. Approximately 1 ? x 3 ??. Ticket is numbered ?3 2 1? and has two dated inkstamps on verso (both oval stamps with the ?S. B. Magnolia / O. F. Shaw, Clerk? in the margin - stamps are dated ?Nov 9, 1867? and ?Mar 8, 1888?). Some wear, soiling to ticket. Excellent and incredibly rare - we could only find one other example of this ticket extant. ?Maysville and Cincinnati United States Mail Line / Steamer MAGNOLIA! Capt. J. H. Prather / One Cabin Passage to New Richmond / This Ticket will be taken at the Steps / O. F. Shaw, [printed] Clerk?. On March 18, 1868, the boilers of the former Confederate (and later Union) steamer, exploded, killing around 80 people (initial reports put the loss at 35 souls) out of a total complement of about 140 crew and passengers. Captain Prather was among the dead. The Magnolia exploded near California, OH. It is unclear why this ticket has two dated stamps, but one of the stamps is dated the day of the disaster.
