THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811?1863). The Virginians. A Tale of the Last Century. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1857?59. 24 original parts, 8vo (224 x 144 mm). 48 etched plates, numerous woodcut vignettes in text. Original publisher?s printed yellow wrappers (light dust soiling, few minor stains, repaired horizontal tear to upper cover of No. 10, No. 1 and 24 neatly rebacked, otherwise clean); folding chemise; quarter pigskin slipcase. Provenance: S & T Gilbert (bookseller?s rubberstamp on No. 4 upper cover). FIRST EDITION IN PARTS, FIRST ISSUE with ?actresses? for ?ancestresses? on p. 207, No. 7, line 15. The Virginians Advertiser is present in each part as are most of the other inserted advertisements according to Van Duzer (No. 14 lacks additional slip, No. 20 lacks both slips, No. 24 lacks Grace Aguilar?s Works).
