  Darwin, Charles. The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1871. 2 volumes. First American edition. Later issue(?) without the errata in vol. II. Publisher?s russet cloth stamped in black with frames and cornerpieces, spines titled in gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Illustrated. 8vo. 2 pp. advertisements at end of vol. I; and 12pp. advertisements at end of vol. II. Spine ends chipped and panels darkened, corners bumped and rubbed, pale spotting with slight cockling to rear panel to vol. I, marginal chipping at fore edge in vol. I with few quires starting, vol. I shelf cocked, contemporary ownership stamps (title-page vol. I; front flyleaf vol. II as well as contemporary ownership signature to title-page). See Freeman 941 & 942. The word ?evolution? occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin?s works.
