TISSOT, J. James (French, 1836-1902). The Life of Our Saviour Jesus Christ. London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co. [and] Paris: Lemercier & Co., 1897-98. Folios. Profusely illustrated by the author in sepia and color. Volumes I and II. Volume I is signed and inscribed in plate, dated 1897 and is number 191. Publisher?s deluxe vellum-backed green cloth boards, front boards and spines decoratively stamped in gilt, pictorial endleaves, top edges gilt (some rubbing, foxing to bindings, some occasional loss of gilt, occasional foxing, thumbsoiling in text). Near fine. FIRST ENGLISH TRADE EDITIONS. Each volume housed in the rare original publisher?s wooden crates with clasps, and hinged lids stamped in brown (the usual wear, soiling).
