MULLICA, Tom (1948 - 2016). Tom Mullica's Magic Scrapbook. 1950s - 80s. Being an oversize wallpaper sample book repurposed by Tom Mullica, the famous comedy bar and stage magician, as a scrapbook chronicling his life and career from amateur magician in rural Wisconsin to bartending magician and proprietor of his own world-famous establishment, The Tom Foolery, in Atlanta.
The album is replete with photographs, autographs, letters, clippings, tickets, brochures, and publicity material related to Mullica, his friends, and contemporaries. Each oversize page is filled with material, neatly mounted in place, with most contents viewable and/or readable.
The contents begin with images and ephemera from Mullica's days as a kid magician, and follow his career through his Army Days to an employee at Abbott's Magic in Colon, Michigan. They also show his eventual move to Atlanta to work with Abb Dickson, and eventually his transition to a bar magician, first at a restaurant called The Abbey, and finally at his own establishment, the Tom Foolery.
Among the correspondents and autographs represented in the scrapbook are Red Skelton, Jonathan Winters, Neil Foster, Michael Skinner, J.C. Doty, Jay Marshall, Ricky Jay, Eugene Burger, Karrell Fox, Duke Stern, Jimmy Nelson, Harry Lorayne, David Hoy, Doc Eason, Walter Blaney, Dan Garrett, Don Alan, Jim Ryan, and dozens and dozens more.
A host of unique documents are included, among them a sketch by Jay Marshall for modifications to the Tom Foolery with notes; a job-offer letter from Recil Bordner of Abbott's Magic ("If you are willing to work for a minimum wage for a few weeks, we will give you a job.") and many other Abbott's-related items; an engraved plaque from the Tom Foolery advertising the cover charge to the bar (possibly a misprint, hence its inclusion); a long typed letter of endorsement from Skelton regarding Mullica and many candid photos of Skelton taken by Mullica, plus tickets to Skelton shows and clippings; an early Asparagus Valley Cultural Society poster; Jerry Mentzer's offer letter to purchase rights to the Mullica Wallet and other Mullica creations; a very early Doug Henning ("The Amazing Hendoo") business card; Mullica's bank book from E. Hill & Sons bank of Colon, Michigan; dozens of candid and studio photos of Mullica throughout his life; boyhood performance programs and clippings; family memorabilia; and much more.
Approximately 100 giant folio-size pages, all of them containing memorabilia, and most filled or over-filled, with perhaps 500+ items in all pasted in place. In sum, a remarkable and personal document that records the many joyous, funny, and triumphant moments in Mullica's career and formative years, and one of the best scrapbooks of its type we have offered plotting the points on the path to stardom of a twentieth century magician. Should be seen.
Expected wear from handling especially to page edges, a few items removed, but generally very good condition.
Collection of Tom Mullica.
