VERNE, Jules (1828-1905). A Journey to the Centre of the Earth? With Illustrations by Riou. Boston: Henry L. Shepard & Co., [ca. 1874]. 8vo. Illustrated. 294, [4, blank] pp. Publisher's full red cloth, front board and spine elaborately stamped in black and gilt, dark blue coated endleaves (spine toned and rubbed, minor soiling to rear board, corners a bit worn, hinges starting, some light chipping and scuffing to endleaves, gift inscription on first blank, text a bit toned). Fine. UNCOMMON AMERICAN PIRACY, THOUGH THIS IS ACTUALLY THE FIRST VERSION OF THIS NOVEL PRINTED IN THE U. S. (the official first American edition published by Scribner, Armstrong used sheets printed by the English publisher). Presumed later issue of the binding, lacking the publisher's name on spine.
