Near contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, marbled endleaves.
Binding worn, scuffed, hinges starting, text a bit toned, foxed, frontispiece faintly dampstained. Armorial bookplate of James Gibbs on fp., and embossed stamp of the Munger Africana Library (at Caltech) on the title-page. Very good. FIRST EDITION. Burckhardt's posthumous treatise of his explorations down the Nile and across Nubia, a "balanced, objective and often sympathetic account of the Arab world" (Hamilton).
