WALLANT, Edward Lewis (1926-1962). The Pawnbroker. New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., [1961]. 8vo. 279 pp. Publisher's full gray cloth, front board and spine stamped in silver, spine stamped in dark gray, publisher's unclipped (?$4.50") dust jacket (cloth spine toned, soiled, some offsetting to endleaves and hinges; some rubbing to jacket, a few small marginal tears to jacket near spine, some soiling to rear jacket panel). Very good. FIRST EDITION OF THIS WRENCHING NOVEL ABOUT A CONCENTRATION CAMP SURVIVOR LIVING IN EAST HARLEM. Wallant wrote extensively about the struggles of American Jews; after his death in 1962, the University of Hartford established a literary award in his name for writers who wrote about American Jews (some recipients include Chaim Potok, Cynthia Ozick, Leo E. Litwack). This novel is the basis of the award-winning Sidney Lumet film (1964) starring Rod Steiger.
