Early half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, compartments completely gilt, lettering?pieces gilt (few missing, one laid in), all edges marbled, marbled endpapers (spines darkened). FIRST EDITION of ?the most famous novel about the law? (Wolff). PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR to Spencer Horatio Walpole on the title: ?Spencer H. Walpole Esquire/From his affect[ionate] friend/The author/26 Nov. 1841?. Walpole went on to serve as Home Secretary three times in the British Conservative Party. Wolff 7072.
