WASHINGTON, Booker T. (1856?1915). The Papers? Edited by Louis R. Harlan and others. Urbana, Chicago and London: University of Illinois Press, [1972?1984]. 14 volumes including index, 8vo. Numerous illustrations from photographs. Original beige cloth; original dust jackets (lacking jackets on Volume I and Volume IV, several unopened in cellophane wrappers). FIRST EDITION of this essential collection of selective writings, addresses and correspondence. Washington was an African American educator, author, orator and advisor to U.S. Presidents, who would become the leading voice of the formerly enslaved who were newly oppressed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
