120: Custom pattern for the Brown family of Rhode Island, (66) dinner forks, (18) lunch forks, (18) tablespoons, (18) teaspoons, USA, 1885-91; Marked; 421 ozt; Note: Tiffany made only a limited number of private custom-designed flatware patterns for clients such as J. P. Morgan, John Mackay and members of the Vanderbilt family. The J. Carter Brown private pattern was designed by Charles T. Grosjean and the patent was issued in 1885. The modified fiddle-and -shell pattern is applied with the Brown coat-of-arms. The reverse is applied with the monogram SBA for Sophia Augusta Brown (1867-1947). She was the only daughter of J. Carter Brown (1797-1874). She married William Watts Sherman in 1885, the same year the service was patented. The pattern is illustrated in Charles Carpenter, Tiffany Silver, 1978, p. 111.
