The item is 7-1/2” x 9”, in large part, titled “WAR SERVICES OF THE LATE CAPTAIN JOHN SINCLAIR, 39th Regiment of the MADRAS ARMY, COMMANDANT LEFT WING 3D REGIMENT OF INFANTRY, HYDERABAD CONTINGENT”. It continues, “Served with the Nerbudda, and Central India Field Forces in 1857 and 48. Commanded the Infantry at the taking of the Fort of Peepla, 27th October 1857. Present in several Actions in the vicinity of Mundessore on the 21st, 23d, and 24th November, and the Storming of the Village of Goodaree on the latter. Commanded the Advance Guard of the Contingent in forcing the Pass near Mad-dinpoor, 30 Mareli 1858. Commanded the Infantry of the Contingent in operations before Theree and Thalbet between the 9th and 12th March. Present in operations before Jhansie frotn 24th March-Commanded the Left Attack at the Siege and Storm of Jhansie from the Ist to the 5th of April, on which day he fell mortally wounded whilst attacking a block of houses occupied by the Enemy. "It is with feelings of the deepest regret the Officer Commanding announces to the Field Force the death of Captain John Sinelair, Commanding Left Wing 3d Infantry, killed by the Enemy on the morning of the 5th instant. In him the public service has been deprived of a zealous, active, and valuable officer; and his friends have to lament the loss of one whom to know was to admire and respect, and who was endeared to them by his many antiable qualities.
